As the semester goes by I am learning more and more new skills thanks to my professors who are dedicated to helping us improve every day. I have been working on the collection for the past 2 months and I am pretty satisfied with how it has turned out.
The initial stage is the most interesting part as we get to use our imaginations and design something that we want to incorporate in our collection. For my collection, I was set on using the draping technique to create the patterns and bring my ideas to life. I have always wanted to represent my country "Nepal" in any way possible and I was able to do so by using fabrics that resemble traditional dresses from my home country.
Below is the step by step process for one of my collection:
After hours of draping and cutting the muslin, I was able to get the right fit for the bodice and decided to play around a little by creating tiny pleads around the bust.
I then transformed the muslin into paper patterns because I was worried about the neck and armhole. I wanted to ensure that those had the correct measurements and used the standard guidelines according to the sizing.
Once the paper pattern was done I started measuring the real fabric and cutting it to the shape of the muslin. The process itself took me hours because I had to move with caution and make sure I was not wasting any fabrics especially since I had to ensure that I left enough fabric to make the plead near the bust.
I used the same process to create a lining for this pattern and finally stitched the lining with the fabric. I was amazed by how structured it looked and the ironing did magic to this piece.
I have put a brief description of the process but honestly, it takes away all the time and energy but since I love fashion I was looking at how the process could help me become a better designer in my life. I still have more to complete and I hope you guys enjoy this whole journey as I did. I will be posting more updates soon.
